UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE-MEMPHIS GARAGE/CENTRAL ENERGY PLANT
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

A University parking garage providing 330 spaces on five levels with a central energy plant in a basement mechanical room. A pedestrian tunnel connects the garage to the University’s underground corridor system.

The egg crate grill unifies the street elevation. This grill facade was shifted slightly to the east as a street-scaled gesture towards the garage entry; cantilevered beams reach out toward the entrance drive. This facade can vary in appearance from opaque to almost completely transparent revealing the concrete structure behind.

The Campbell Clinic, located on this site from 1920 until 2002, was demolished for this project. Although not architecturally significant, the Clinic was well known in Memphis. As a tribute to the former Clinic, there are references in the design to broken and demolished construction. Providing ventilation for the lower parking levels, the northwest was opened with a broken out corner and the broken corner piece was placed in front of the garage. A commemorative plaque for the Clinic has been attached to this concrete piece. This broken corner links the new structure with the institution that preceded it; it gives the garage a historical sense of place.
