This project consists of a 21,000 square foot
rehearsal/production/education center for Ballet Memphis, the only ballet
company in Memphis. The facility features three light-filled studios
linked to office, support and production spaces by an expansive gallery.
The building's design is intended to provide a place for vigorous and
disciplined work, while conveying the grace and excitement of dance to
students, visitors and staff. The exterior is a tightly-stretched skin of
silver metal panels and gray tinted glass, designed to provide
transparency between the inside and outside. The main roof, as well as the
exterior skin, curves gracefully to suggest the movement of the ballet.
The roofline is punctuated by a series of sculptures of dancers supported
by steel pylons.
