GRACE ST. LUKE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH COLUMBARIUM MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE A columbarium is a collection of niches containing the ashes of those who have been cremated.  As cremation becomes more widespread, a columbarium provide a place for burial as an integral part of the church community. WPA was commissioned to design this columbarium for Grace St. Luke's, a 100 year old church located in the center of Memphis, where land for a conventional cemetery was not available.  The design consists of some 50 limestone niches set into the outside wall of the nave.  Future expansion is planned for several hundred additional niches.  A fenced, landscaped scatter garden surrounds the columbarium to receive the ashes of those who prefer the return of their remains to the natural world. The columbarium was dedicated on All Saints Day, 1997.
