CHARLES
E. DIEHL MEMORIAL COURT, RHODES COLLEGE
MEMPHIS,
TENNESSEE
A memorial to the first president of Rhodes College, the Diehl Memorial
marks the main front entrance to the college. Its centerpiece, a
monumental bronze sculpture of Dr. Diehl, was executed by Edward
Rust. Diehl Court, which provides a setting for the sculpture,
consists of an open plaza paved in multicolored slate and features four
large slate benches inscribed with quotations by Dr. Diehl. The
court was carefully planned to respect the prevailing Collegiate Gothic
style of the campus and to accentuate the graceful oak alley of mature oak
trees connecting Palmer Hall to North Parkway.
