HALLS PUBLIC LIBRARY

HALLS, TENNESSEE

Currently the proposed addition to the Halls Library derives its architectural character from the existing library, a 1930s vintage Spanish-style gasoline station, previously renovated by WPA, which has become a local landmark.  The addition has been held back behind the existing reading room facing Church Street, so as to avoid dominating the original structure.  The rough stucco walls, small-paned windows, flat roof, and engaged pilasters of the existing building  have been reproduced.  To the rear a porte-cochere, ironically recalling the old gasoline station, provides shelter for a book depository and entrance.  The new addition extends northward and is designed to imply a visual connection to the City Hall, thus suggesting a unified municipal complex.
