LICHTERMAN NATURE CENTER, PHASE I

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

Lichterman Nature Center is a 65-acre rural site in the heart of East Memphis.

The master plan is carefully laid out to cause minimal damage to the natural environment while taking advantage of the available vistas and terrain. The Visitor’s Center is placed on the edge of an open field overlooking a large pond. Large windows in the Orientation Room, Dining Area and Learning Center focus the visitor on views of the pond and the wooded area near the amphitheater. The Orientation Room will house special exhibits as well as functioning as a meeting room. It will allow visitors to warm themselves around the stone fireplace or immerse themselves in interactive exhibits.

Natural materials such as wood and stone are used in combination with steel and a glulam roof to create a rustic, warm and open lodge style building. Wood glulams and vaulted bead board ceilings cover the main space from the entry to the covered deck.

The facility opened in the Winter of 2000.
