ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH ACTIVITIES BUILDING

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

In order to respond to a growing demand for recreational facilities and to further its community outreach program, St. John's Episcopal Church engaged WPA to design this 18,000 square foot Activities Building.  St. John's sanctuary is a faithful reproduction of the 18th century Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Virginia and a primary requirement for the new building was architectural compatibility with this prototype.  WPA carefully researched the architecture of colonial Virginia before beginning design studies.

The new two-story structure contains a sky-lit gymnasium/multipurpose room that can be used for banquets and lectures as well as for athletics.  A large kitchen, meeting rooms, fitness center, office, and youth room complete the program.  The new building is connected to the existing Parish Hall by an arched porte-cochere.

Red brick, white wood trim, serpentine garden walls, dormers, large roundel windows, and hipped roof with lantern all derive from colonial precedents and continue the Williamsburg theme of the church campus.
