ST. LUKE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH ADDITIONS

JACKSON, TENNESSEE

St. Luke's Church has been a prominent landmark in downtown Jackson for some 150 years.  To respond to the needs of an active, growing Parish, including many young families, the project consisted of a new Parish Hall/Educational Wing, adjoining the original red brick Gothic Revival structure.  Totaling some 17,000 square feet of new and renovated space on a rather constricted urban site, the heard of the project was the new 300 seat multipurpose Parish Hall.  This high-ceiling space, which features exposed wood roof trusses to recall the main worship space, provides space for lectures, banquets, dances, and community meetings.

The scope also included a new kitchen, classrooms, choir rehearsal room, nursery, library, and restrooms.  The existing Parish House was completely renovated to provide new church administrative space. including offices for the rector and assistant rector.

Great care was taken to respect and complement the historic architecture in the design of the new addition, which features material forms and a scale derived from the original church.  Construction of the first phase of the $1.75 million project was completed in the summer of 1995.
